Spring Breeding Season Recap: Marbling, Size, and Sustainability for a Better Beef Company
It has been a little while since we have shared a blog update from the farm, but honestly that is usually a sign that things are moving fast at Wilders Wagyu.
This spring has probably been one of the most intentional breeding seasons we have ever had.
Over the last several years, our philosophy has continued to evolve as we have gathered more and more real-world carcass data through our beef company. As producers, we have to constantly challenge ourselves to improve, not just genetically, but operationally and financially as well.
This spring, our breeding focus centered around one word: sustainability.
Sustainability
At the end of the day, sustainability matters in every part of the cattle business. To run a truly sustainable Wagyu operation, cattle have to do more than marble. They have to produce pounds.
The bottom line is: we get paid on pounds.
For years, the Wagyu industry has heavily prioritized marbling, and rightly so. Exceptional marbling is what separates Wagyu beef from every other beef product in the world. But as our beef company has grown and more carcass data has come back through our system, we have become increasingly focused on balancing elite Wagyu marbling with real size, growth, yield, and performance.
At the same time, we are placing a major emphasis on maternal traits that create long-lasting, efficient cows for the future of our herd. Adding milk, structural soundness, and strong feet into our breeding philosophy is critical as we continue building sustainable Fullblood Wagyu cows that can stay productive for years to come.
We believe the future belongs to 100% Fullblood Wagyu cattle that can:
Marble at an elite level
Produce heavier, more efficient carcasses
Maintain structural integrity and longevity
Raise high-quality calves generation after generation
This spring breeding season was built entirely around that philosophy.
And importantly, the data driving these decisions is Fullblood Wagyu data, not F1 data. Every breeding decision we made this spring was backed by performance we are seeing in our own 100% Fullblood Wagyu genetics program and through theAustralian Wagyu Association database.
The Foundation: Arubial United P0342
Much of this breeding season centered around the influence of one bull: Arubial United P0342.
Over time, United has proven himself to be one of the most impactful Wagyu sires we have ever incorporated into our program. Early on, what stood out most was his size, growth, and ability to consistently add pounds. But as more carcass data has continued to come in, we have also been extremely encouraged by the marbling quality we are seeing from his progeny.
Incorporating Arubial United into our breeding program has changed the direction of our beef company. He proved that we do not have to sacrifice growth and carcass weight to produce elite Wagyu beef quality.
Because of that, we built much of our spring AI program around United progeny.
This spring, we bred over 200 Fullblood Wagyu cows as part of our focused breeding program.
TBR Shogun 7704K β Building Growth and Scale
The first major sire utilized this season was TBR Shogun 7704K.
We believe Shogun is one of the best early United sons currently in the United States. Dean Ackerman with Flying A Wagyu purchased him out of the Triangle B program, and we are excited to share ownership in Shogun alongside Dean and Don Brown.
What excites us most about Shogun is his combination of size, structure, growth, and real-world performance potential. He is also enrolled in the Australian Wagyu Association PTP test, which will allow valuable data to continue flowing back into the breed for years to come.
Shogun currently ranks in the Top 1% for BFI, and we believe the added size and growth he offers will play a major role in building more sustainable cattle that still maintain elite Wagyu beef quality.
WILD Navigator 28M β The Future Combination
We are also incredibly excited to put the first WILD Navigator 28M progeny on the ground.
Navigator sold in the StayWILDβ25 sale for $59,000 for walking rights and half semen interest to our good friends at Genesis Enterprises, and we truly believe he represents one of the most exciting young United sons in the Wagyu industry today.
Navigator offers an extremely rare combination of elite growth and carcass quality:
Top 1% BFI
Top 1% FTI
Top 1% for 200, 400, and 600 Day Weights
Top 1% Mature Cow Weight
Top 1% Carcass Weight
What makes Navigator so exciting for us is his ability to maintain a 3.1 Marble Score ranking in the Top 6% while still carrying elite growth and carcass traits.
We truly believe Navigator could be a game changer for our beef company.
What excites us even more is the amount of data that will be generated on this bull over the coming years. At Wilders, we will be producing significant Fullblood Wagyu data, while our partners at Genesis Enterprises will simultaneously be generating large amounts of F1 data.
The combination of both Fullblood and F1 performance data across multiple environments should make Navigator an extremely important sire moving forward.
WILD Sampson 217L β Proven Power
Another major focus this season was WILD Sampson 217L.
Sampson is a true power bull developed within the Wilders program and continues to impress us more every year. He currently ranks inside the Top 100 sires for BFI and Top 10 for EMA on the Australian Wagyu Association Sire Summary.
His performance profile is exactly the direction we believe the Fullblood Wagyu industry needs to continue moving toward:
Top 2% BFI
Top 1% FTI
Top 2% F1TI
Top 1% for 200, 400, and 600 Day Weights
Top 1% Mature Cow Weight
Top 1% Carcass Weight
More importantly, Sampson consistently produces some of the heaviest calves we have seen on the farm to date.
His ability to generate size and pounds while maintaining carcass quality is exactly the direction we believe the Fullblood Wagyu industry needs to continue moving toward.
On the maternal side, Sampson stems from our prolific Australian donor P526 Ms Worldwide, a Sumo Cattle Co Michifuku F154 daughter that continues to prove herself as one of the cornerstone females within our program.
With growth numbers like these while maintaining a 3.1 Marble Score ranking in the Top 7%, we believe Sampson could become a major contributor to the future of our beef company.
WILD Bookkeeper 199M β Marbling Without Compromise
To round out the breeding season, we incorporated WILD Bookkeeper 199M into the program.
Bookkeeper sold in StayWILDβ25 to Genesis Enterprises for $72,000 for half semen interest and represents one of the most exciting marbling-focused bulls we have ever produced.
Bookkeeper is sired by the legendary Mayura Quantum, one of the most globally recognized marbling sires in the Wagyu breed and a cornerstone of the world-renowned Mayura Station breeding program in Australia. The Mayura program has become internationally known for producing elite Fullblood Wagyu cattle with exceptional carcass quality, marbling consistency, and some of the most sought-after Wagyu beef in the world.
Backed maternally by 73J, a powerful Sumo Cattle Co Michifuku F154 daughter, Bookkeeper combines some of the most proven marbling genetics in the Wagyu breed today.
His genetic profile is truly unique:
Top 1% BFI
Top 1% FTI
Top 1% F1TI
Top 1% Marble Score
Top 1% Marble Fineness
We truly believe Bookkeeper is the type of bull capable of breeding elite marbling into any Wagyu herd while still maintaining the structure, balance, and functionality we demand in our breeding program.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, we believe the future of the Wagyu industry will increasingly depend on balance.
The industry cannot simply chase marbling alone. Long-term sustainability requires cattle that:
Produce elite beef quality
Generate real carcass yield
Function efficiently in commercial environments
Create profitability throughout the supply chain
That is the direction we are committed to at Wilders Wagyu.
This spring breeding season was not built around trends, hype or WBVs alone. It was built around data, sustainability, and producing cattle that work for the long-term future of our beef company.
We are incredibly excited about the calves coming behind this breeding season and what they represent for the next chapter of our WILD story.
The next generation of elite Fullblood Wagyu genetics is already on the way, right here at Wilders Wagyu!
